Join experienced arborists and public works professionals for a half-day workshop combining classroom presentations, hands-on pruning instruction, and a bucket-truck pruning demonstration. Practical techniques you can use in the field! Presented by WCAMPWA in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
Workshop Agenda
- 8:00 AM — Check-In: Welcome and registration.
- 8:15 AM — Tree Care Presentations: Three practical presentations, approximately 20 minutes each — Tree Biology, Practical Ways to Avoid Killing Trees, and Pruning Basics. Presenters: Amy Mackenzie and guest arborists.
- 9:30 AM — Hands-On Pruning & Tree Training: Break into small groups of 5–6 participants to evaluate young tree structure, identify branches for removal, make proper pruning cuts, train and develop young trees, and use hand pruning tools properly and safely. Instructors: Amy Mackenzie and arborist instructors.
- 10:30 AM — Bucket Pruning Demonstration: Aerial tree pruning demonstration covering bucket truck safety, PPE and fall protection, work-zone safety, aerial pruning techniques, chainsaw safety, rigging and lowering techniques, communication between aerial and ground crews, and identifying hazards and controlling the drop zone. Demonstrators: Beau Norris, Steve Martinez, and Trevor Hall.
- 12:00 PM — Conclusion & Materials: Workshop conclusion and distribution of Tree Owner’s Manuals and additional tree-care outreach materials.
Who Should Attend
Municipal Public Works Administrators, Highway & Parks Personnel, Tree Crews, Supervisors, and other municipal staff responsible for public trees and right-of-way maintenance.
What You’ll Take Away
A better understanding of tree biology, proper pruning practices, young-tree training, safety, and when specialized arboricultural services are required. Come prepared to learn, participate, and get your hands dirty!
